    Post-Vasectomy Testing

    What is post-vasectomy testing?

After your vasectomy, you’ll need a follow-up semen analysis to confirm the procedure worked and that there are no sperm left in your semen. This is the only way to confirm that you’re no longer fertile and that it’s safe to stop using birth control.

    What does the test involve?

You'll provide a semen sample, usually 8 to 12 weeks after your vasectomy.

The sample is examined under 4K video microscopes to check for sperm.

It may take 15–20 ejaculations to completely clear sperm from your system.

    ⚠️

Important: Keep using another form of birth control until you receive lab results.

Here's What We Test for Post-Vasectomy

    0 Motile Sperm

Ensures complete absence of motile sperm, confirming the success of a vasectomy and eliminating the risk of pregnancy.

Less than 0.1 Million Immotile Sperm

Recognized as an acceptable result according to the AUA, as non-motile sperm lack the ability to fertilize an egg.

Top 3 Reasons Why Post-Vasectomy Testing Matters

    1

It confirms the vasectomy worked: A vasectomy is a highly effective procedure — but not until all sperm are cleared out. This test confirms your body is sperm-free.

    2

It prevents unplanned pregnancies: If you skip the test or stop using birth control too early, there’s still a chance of pregnancy.

    3

It protects your peace of mind: A quick test gives long-term confidence that you’ve successfully taken control of your reproductive future.

    What do the results mean?

    Test Result
    What It Means
    No sperm found
You're cleared — no more birth control needed.
    Dead (non-motile) sperm
Usually safe, but a doctor may recommend a retest.
    Live (motile) sperm
Vasectomy is not confirmed — more time and retest required.

When should I take the test?

Most men take the test 8–12 weeks after surgery.

Your doctor will tell you the right time based on your procedure and how many times you've ejaculated since.

    What Our Customers Are Saying

    Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our products, services, and policies.

    Understanding Results

    What does "clearance" mean?

Clearance means zero motile sperm detected in your sample. AUA guidelines allow rare non-motile sperm (<0.1 million/mL) since dead sperm cannot fertilize eggs. Any presence of motile sperm requires continued backup contraception and retesting.

What if my test shows sperm still present?

Most men eventually clear with additional time and ejaculations. Retest every 4-6 weeks until clearance is achieved. If motile sperm persist beyond 6 months, consult your urologist to evaluate for possible recanalization or incomplete procedure.

Can I trust at-home testing results?

Yes. Mate Health provides CLIA-certified laboratory analysis that meets AUA guidelines and medical standards. Our active cooling technology (2-15°C) preserves sperm viability during shipping, ensuring accurate motility assessment. Results are equivalent to hospital-based testing with superior convenience.

    Testing & Timing

When should I test after my vasectomy?

Test 8-16 weeks after your procedure AND after at least 20 ejaculations. Testing too early may show residual sperm that would naturally clear with time. Continue using backup contraception until you receive laboratory clearance, regardless of timeline.

    Why is post-vasectomy testing important?

Up to 30-50% of men never complete post-vasectomy testing, leaving sterility unconfirmed. Testing is the only way to verify your vasectomy was successful and prevents unintended pregnancy. AUA guidelines strongly recommend laboratory confirmation before relying on your vasectomy for birth control.

What makes Mate Health's test more accurate than home sperm count kits?

Our test measures both motile (moving) and immotile (non-moving) sperm with 0.01 M/mL sensitivity, the highest detection available. We distinguish between live sperm that can cause pregnancy versus dead sperm that cannot. Smartphone-based kits cannot accurately measure motility, the critical factor for AUA clearance.

A vasectomy is over 99% effective but only after testing confirms it. One quick test gives you clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.
